In Conversation with Sven Marquardt | FULLY BOOKED
15 Jan | Photography and inspiration in Berlin
Overview
Inspired by the exhibition Helga Paris: für uns , which makes people visible in their uniqueness, documents everyday life, and captures subcultures, Sven Marquardt shares how he discovered photography through his mentor Helga Paris. The conversation explores Sven’s complete photographic journey – from his beginnings in East Berlin in the 1980s to his work today.
It focuses on his artistic formation within the punk and new-wave scene, the profound changes following the fall of the Berlin Wall, and his ongoing work as a doorman in Berlin’s nightlife, which continues to shape him to this day.
Sven’s return to photography merges these two worlds. It is inspired by the city’s nightlife and constant transformation, which continually offers new characters, stories, and creative impulses.
This talk is moderated by Paloma Frau, Director of Cultural Events & Programming at Fotografiska Berlin. With the ticket you enjoy access to all of our exhibitions the entire day, including the one from Helga Paris: für uns, in which you can find a portrait of Sven from his teenage years (opening hours: 10:00 – 23:00).
Please note: This talk will be held in German.

About Sven Marquardt
Sven Marquardt, born in 1962 in East Berlin, is one of the city’s most influential photographers. From the mid-1980s, he was part of the emerging punk, new-wave, and arts scene in the Prenzlauer Berg district. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he paused his photographic work and immersed himself in the city’s growing nightlife. Since the late 1990s, his work as a doorman has shaped his perception of people, intensity, and authenticity. Sven’s photography combines formal rigor, clear imagery, and dramatic monochrome contrasts with a sensitivity for the unusual in people. His work, while appearing classical, simultaneously reflects transformation, change, and the connection between past, present, and future.
