Opening: No Place Like Home by Lee Shulman

19 June | An artist talk on the comeback of the archive

Duration: 1 hour
Offered languages: English

Overview

We are opening the exhibition No Place Like Home presented by The Anonymous Project, initiated by artist Lee Shulman with an artist talk hosted by the curator of the exhibition and Exhibitions Manager at Fotografiska Berlin, Claire Ducresson-Boët.

The artist collects amateur photographs through The Anonymous Project and transforms them into emotional, cinematic narratives in his projects. In an era where digital images are created and disappear rapidly, his work highlights the enduring importance of archival photography.

Together, Shulman and Ducresson-Boët reflect on how personal photographs can become part of a collective memory through context and curatorial practice. Also, why archival work is particularly inspiring for so many young photographers today.

Your ticket includes access to all our exhibitions on the same day.

About the host

Claire Ducresson-Boët is Exhibitions Manager at Fotografiska Berlin. She holds a PhD in art history with a specialization in the history of photography. Her research focuses on the afterlife of images and how they persist, reappear, and transform over time through circulation, recontextualization, and remediation. She is particularly interested in artistic practices that engage with these dynamics, especially through family and collective archives.

As a member of the Berlin-based collective analogueNOW, Claire also actively supports analog photography through events and community-building initiatives that connect practitioners across the city.

About the artist

A multiple award-winning film director and artist, Lee Shulman (born in London, UK, 1973 – based in Paris, France) founded The Anonymous Project in 2017, shortly after buying his first box of anonymous Kodachrome slides Through curation and photographic transformation, Shulman reanimates these personal photographs, weaving them into compelling narratives that explore memory, family, love, and cultural shifts across generations. Collaboration is integral to his approach, and he has instigated many hybrid works. His work with Omar Victor Diop, for instance, sees him inserting the Senegalese photographer into family photos to create a new narrative in what was a racially segregated period in the USA. Shulman has published several books. In 2024, he directed I Am Martin Parr, a widely noted documentary about the British photographer.
