Artist Talk: Banz & Bowinkel

Overview

Meet artist duo Banz & Bowinkel and discover their new installation COMPOSITIONS / DRIFT, unveiled on the façade of our museum as part of the evening.

In the conversation moderated by Peggy Schoenegge, Chair of the Board of medienkunstverein e.V., Giulia Banz and Friedemann Bowinkel reflect on their artistic journey and long-standing collaboration. They also offer insights into their creative practice, exploring how they work with computer-generated imagery, animation, and immersive technologies.

The work is presented in collaboration with medienkunstverein e.V.

About the artist

Giulia Bowinkel (*1983) and Friedemann Banz (*1980) live and work in Berlin. Since 2009, they have created works together under the name Banz & Bowinkel. After studying with Albert Oehlen at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, they began producing computer-generated art: images, animations, installations, as well as augmented and virtual works. Their award-winning pieces have been exhibited at venues such as ZKM Karlsruhe, Centre Pompidou Paris, and Haus der elektronischen Künste Basel. Their works are represented in collections including Museum Kunstpalast and Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. Banz & Bowinkel are members of medienkunstverein e. V.

About the moderator

Peggy Schoenegge is an art historian, independent curator, author, and Chair of the Board of medienkunstverein (mkv) in Berlin. As co-director of the exhibition platform peer to space, she curates international exhibitions of digital, internet, and new media art. She lectures internationally at institutions including ZKM Karlsruhe, the German Ethics Council, and Immersive Tech Week Rotterdam. She also teaches Cultural Informatics at HTW Berlin and is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Bonn, researching web-based spaces in art.
